Flathand Flatland (2007)
This guitar piece is based on Reich’s Clapping Music, using the same phasing technique and African rhythmic pattern. I noticed that since there are twelve iterations of a phased rhythm in a twelve-pulse cycle, with twelve half-steps in an octave, you could expand the concept of phasing to the include pitch: Two guitars begin in unison. One repeats throughout while the other shifts both rhythmically and downward in semitones, through all the composite rhythms and harmony until the guitars reach both harmonic and rhythmic unison. Additional guitars highlight the harmonic motion.
